A detailed Summary of Conversation in Hamlet


The characters of Horatio, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern from Shakespeare's Hamlet are distinctly diverse. These characters are on opposite ends and differ from each other greatly. To understand how they are so different, the reader will have to examine these characters' relationship with Hamlet, their motives and what supporting characters think of them.

Horatio is Hamlet's friend and confidant. This is made apparent when Hamlet addresses Horatio by saying, "Sir, my good friend..." (1,2,163-165). An instance where their friendship is made known would be when Hamlet shares with Horatio all of his experiences and misgivings, especially with his deceased father. Hamlet's lack of concern to revealing his feelings only goes to prove his confidence with Horatio and confirm the fact that the two are close friends. Unlike that of Horatio, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are received by Hamlet not so respectably. When questioned by the queen to how Hamlet acknowledged them they replied by saying, "Most like a gentleman. But with much forcing of his disposition." (3, 1, 12-13). This goes to show how Hamlet does not observe the two with respect, as is the case with Horatio, but rather treats them as anyone else with a high social status. Eventually Hamlet figures out their true intentions and goes to describe them as, "[a sponge] that soaks up the King's countenance, his rewards, his authorities. But such officers do the King best service in the end: he keeps them, like an ape, in the corner of his jaw- first mouthed, to be last swallowed.
