Down with the Syndrome

It is more common in our society than people are familiar with it to be and every year as women wait longer to get pregnant its chances increase. A genetic condition called Down syndrome becomes increasingly common as women wait longer to have children. Though the disorder of the 21st chromosome has mild to severe affects on those inflicted, people can still try to live normal lives.

Down syndrome is the result of an additional 21st chromosome also known as trisomy 21. "Scientist have discovered three types of Down syndrome nondisjunction, or containing three copies of the 21st chromosome; mosaicism occurs when nondisjunction of the 21st chromosome occurs after fertilization, and translocation, occurs when part of the 21st chromosome breaks off and attaches itself to another chrom


In today's world, those with Down syndrome usually live up to and past the age of 50. When in the 1920's their life expectancy was only up to the age of 9. Even though people with Down syndrome are living longer, age also has its own consequences. The most common affects are premature aging, memory loss, and impaired judgment similar to that of Alzheimer's disease.
