The Garden of Eden
The characters in The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Genesis story of the Garden of Eden both contain the perpetual values and character traits of: greed for power, man’s inability to resist female temptation, and man’s need for companionship. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, this is shown in the characters of Enkidu and Gilgamesh. In the Genesis story of the Garden of Eden, this is displayed in the characters of Adam and Eve. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh and Enkidu are characterized with values which exist in today’s society. The character Gilgamesh elucidates to us the sins of greed and pride, which are very common to human beings today. Gilgamesh is a very powerful and proud individual who abused his power: “No son is left with his father, for Gilgamesh takes them all, even the children; yet the king should be a shepherd to his people. His lust leaves no virgin to her lover, neither the warrior’s daughter nor the wife of the noble.”
