Asian American Success: Myth or Reality?
Asian Americans have been a part of American society for many centuries but for most of the time they have been ignored or made to feel like they were second-class citizens. As of recently many Asian Americans have gained notoriety for their achievements and success in the American job industry. Some of these Asian Americans include the likes of Michael Chang, a tennis star, who has won over a total of 30 career titles and has been a finalist in 21 other tournaments and set many precedents which include being the youngest player to win a main draw match at the U.S. Open and the youngest to reach a Tour semifinal. Becoming the youngest French Open / Grand Slam Champion ever in 1989 (the year after he turned pro), he then became the youngest to rank in the Top 5. Chang ended an American drought of the French Open, becoming the first American male to win the French Open since 1955. In 1991 he reached the quarterfinals or better in 13 tournaments. Based on the above information I have come to the conclusion that the Asian American success is indeed a myth. Once Asian Americans can reach the top levels of management then and only then will I consider Asian Americans successful. It may take some time but I believe it will happen and when it does then people may call the Asian Americans the "model minority." Asian Americans have been classified as the Model Minority, even though they have experienced prejudice and discrimination they seem to succeed economically, socially, and educationally without resorting to political or violent confrontations with Whites. The Model Minority status seems to be placed upon Asian Americans by people who see the success of some of the Asian American Society as success by the whole of the society, this fact is far from the truth. Asian Americans have the lowest divorce rate of any racial group in the United States and they also have the lowest unemployment rates and teen pregnancy.
