To a large extent, I believe that television has damaged American families. However, I also believe that in some areas of television, it actually has benefited many of American families. Most of the things we see on television affect the way we perceive life. "We watch television to escape from our families because television shows us how dull our families really are" (Ehrenreich 138). Television basically stereotypes the ideal world that we should be living in. That is why Americans spend so much time watching television. For instance, the Disney Cartoons such as "Bambi" shows the forest animals living in peace. In real life, these animals would rather eat each other rather than spend a second communicating with one another. The cartoons are entertaining but at the same time it is giving us a false view on the reality of nature and animals. Television can exaggerate simple everyday occasions and twist them into a way that seems most entertaining to us. Talk shows for the most part help many families with their problems. Many talk shows offer suggestions on how families can deal with various problems that may arise. In reality, if we talked to our parents, then we would only be talking to our parents, plain and simple routine. On television, if an actor talked to a parent on a show, then you can expect many outrageous occurrences to happen, such as an actual fight occurring or maybe even a heart-felt resolution to an argument. In a way television makes everyday occurrences seem more fulfilling or have more meaning. That is why we run to television when we have problems that we cannot understand. For some people, they will not run to their friends or family for help. They would rather watch television and realize they have a problem in hoping that watching a show might help them cope. Many of us, including myself like the way that the ideal families deal with their problems, and we often run to the closest source for help, which is our television. Although we often find ourselves going to the television for recreational and personal purposes, we ignore the fact that there are other things that we can go to of do. Not only do the media have an effect on American families, but television shows do as well.
