One thing is when in college he joined the Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) and on gradation he became a second lieutenant in the United States Army (Levy 293). Later on after gradation Colin served in Vietnam for 2 years. He was also stationed in Korea (Hughes 63). However, in 1975 he enrolled at the National War college before given command of the Second Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division (Levy 294). Soon after graduation from Leavenworth he went on another tour of duty in Vietnam (Hughes 87). Later, in June 1979 Colin Powell was promoted to Brigadier General, earning his first of four stars (Hughes 112). Eventually, on April 4, 1989 Powell became a four-star general (Hughes 128).
