The Sensitive Gender Subject
There has always been a fine line between men and women. Gender bias has existed for decades and unfortunately, the belief that women are inferior to men has set society back in terms of how people live their home and business lives. Yet over the years, so much of people's attention has been on the unjust treatment of women, while the mistreatment of men has been overlooked, and most of the time deemed non-existent. A contributing factor to why people are mistreated or looked down upon is because they do not fit a criteria. To be the "ideal" man or woman in society today, there are certain sets of unwritten guidelines that must be followed. For instance, a "real" man might be expected to be strong not only mentally, but also physically, work, pay the bills, watch sports, mow the lawn, burp, be insensitive, and think about sex every 15 seconds. While women are supposed to stay at home, take care of the kids and the house, be sensitive, emotional, proper, and feminine all the time. In a relationship, men are supposed to be in control, pay for everything, and try to consider the women's feelings. But, according to Christina Sommers, "women find that they can work part-time, full-time, or stay at home. Men have the choice of full-time, full-time, or full-time. Men are more constricted"(49). uring a football game. It would be inappropriate to hear a female burp or sit down and root for the home team. Society has made women think that these things are unladylike and only for men to do. Men are deemed sissies if they go to the opera or watch Oprah. The definition of what it means to be the "ideal" man or woman in society changes as frequently as we change our underwear. The unwritten guidelines created long ago for us to base our lives upon, are increasingly being rewritten, ignored and forgotten. Even so, some members of society are still practicing the ignorant mentality of gender bias and generalization. There is no doubt that men and women will always be t
