Mini Critique Crito

What Crito was basically about was true friendship. In summary Crito, a long time friend of Socrates comes to see Socrates in the holding cell or prison as he awaits his execution. But the execution can?t take place until the state galley returns from an annual religious mission from Delos.

Crito comes to the aid of his friend in hopes to save his life. He tries to convince Socrates to escape from the jail, to evade his execution. Crito uses various methods and tactics to convince Socrates that leaving or running away would be in his best interest.

Crito starts of by saying that he and a few others have pooled some money together and have all the resources necessary to pull of the escape. But Socrates refuses. The next tactic Crito uses is self-pity saying that the general public will look down upon him (Crito) for not bailing out his own b


Crito then tries another method he brings up Socrates children and the fact that he is abandoning them and they will have no chance of being well educated. Socrates replies by saying that the state will take care of them or even that Crito himself could take care of them.

The only reason why Crito didn?t succeed was because Socrates was too over powering. His mind was much stronger than that of Crito?s. He did a great object to every trial close that Crito could come up with and he even made Crito a believer as to Socrates execution being the right. Crito had no chance against Socrates in a argument as such that took place.

I think the moral obligations a person has to his friends vary with the friendship. In this case Crito and Socrates are very good friends (long time friends) in which case the moral obligation would be very high.
