When management philosophies and values relate to people as individuals, companies will find it easier to retain valuable employees.

Long tenure, especially lifetime tenure, is rare. Fading, too, is the loyalty that once bound employers and employees. Why? Because the old deal offered secure employment in exchange for loyal service. The new deal did not. Companies need to build the kind of work environment that engenders creativity and people that want to go that extra mile. Management must be receptive to employees' viewpoints and make them believe that they are contributing as individuals, not just a number on the payroll. Give employees a variety of work, trust them to carry out high impact, high profile assignments and offer easy access to management.

A responsible employer takes a long-term view of employment. This doesn't mean they guarantee jobs for life or fail to remove under performing employees or disregard profit and shareholders.
