As you already know, I plan on turbo charging my four cylinder mustang this winter. I am glad that you are interested in doing the same to your car. You came to the right person, because I am going to tell you as much as I know about starting and finishing a project like this. First of all, you need to either have a four cylinder motor (turbocharged), or you need to get a hold of one. These motors are very hard to find complete, so when you do get a hold of one, buy it! Just to let you know, these motors can be found on SVO Mustangs from the years 1984-1986. Usually they run anywhere from $350.00 to $700.00 depending on the condition, and location. The reason I say location is because you can also purchase one on the internet, but you may be required to pay and additional freight fee. As far as the condition, you have to take into consideration how many miles the motor has, and how it runs. I was lucky enough to find a complete, mint condition motor here in El Paso for only $500.00, and the guy I bought it from even shipped it to my house at no extra cost.

Once you have purchased your motor and it is complete,

start it up and listen to it run. You want to do this to find out if there is anything mechanically wrong with it. Once you have listened to it, write down a list of possible dysfunctional parts. Then comes the fun part; take apart the motor to actually find out which parts really are dysfunctional. You want to do this to find out what parts you are going to be required to purchase. Not only that, but you may be able to replace one of the parts with a higher performance part since you are going to upgrade your engine.

Next, you need to investigate where you can purchase all the parts for your project. The reason I say this is because there aren't many vendors that sell parts for motors like these anymore. You especially won't find any parts at the actual Ford dealership, much less any aftermarket vendor. Off the top of my head, I can think of two vendors that actually specialize in parts for motors such as these. One is in California, and the other one is in Florida. I will soon get all the information about these vendors for you. Please remember that parts for these motors can get pretty pricey, especially the ones that are rare, and hard to find. In the next few minutes I am going to give you a basic list of the parts that I know you will need, as well as an approximate price.

To start, you are obviously going to need to either rebuild, or purchase a new turbo. A new turbo will run you anywhere from $350.00 to $500.00. This will get you a T3-TO4E Hybrid with a ceramic ball bearing center from Turbonetics. A turbo basically recycles air that comes out of the exhaust, and puts it directly back into the intake of the car, which will in turn make the engine a whole lot faster. Also, keep in mind that as you get further along with the project, you need to upgrade many of the parts in your engine to handle all the new found power. Some of these include, intake, exhaust, headers, camshaft, gears, racing clutch, fuel injectors, fuel pump, and intercooler.
