Abortion
Societal issues, specifically ethical issues, can be very difficult to resolve and may mean an awful lot to certain groups of people. Although there are several of these societal, ethical debates transpiring around us, abortion tends to be one of the nastier controversial subjects. Taking a stance on this delicate issue can be fairly difficult depending on what type of person you are. Regardless of other people's position on the debate of abortion I have a very conservative view towards this act of "murder." I believe that abortion is defying the precious gift of human life regardless of the circumstances. Allan Beck conveys the exact same message when he emphasizes that "a baby is a magical creature - you can lock him out of your workshop, but you can't lock him out of your heart." (p. 5) John Chrysostom states in one of his famous pieces of literature, "Why then dost thou abuse the gift of God, and fight with his laws, and follow after what is a curse as if a blessing, and make the chamber of procreation a chamber of murder and arm the woman that was given for childbearing unto slaughter." (p. 1) This reiterates the notion that we are turning a blessing, for that is what children are supposed to be, into a curse. When adults
, or even teens decide to proceed with "unprotected" sex, and as a result (accidentally) the female discovers to her dismay that she is carrying a child, it has become particularly convenient to undergo a legal abortion. Everyone, regardless of background, morals, or societal upbringing, requires the presence of a "shelter." When under any sort of pressure that may face someone, a place that we can go to and be loved is essential. This is a place where we can truly feel safe. Unborn babies, similarly, need a protective environment, not because of societal pressures, but from nature's elements. However, the womb, which was once the safest place in the world for a baby, has become on of the most deadly locations for the unborn child. When one argues that she has total control over her body and that the decisions she makes considering her fetus is totally up to herself. This doesn't sound very sensible does it? Our society limits the rights of individuals when they violate the rights of others. Aside from abortion, when may a human being, in persuit of wealth, career, or any other goal, have the legal right to kill or even injure a innocent civilian? Why then are rights extended to the fact that a mother may take the life of her child who has done nothing wrong at all? Since women claim they have control over their bodies, they should exercise that control, before they even get pregnant. Not only does the law put our own bodies in our control, but also in this case, the life of another. (Garton, 2000) "Pro-abortionist base their arguments on emotion, not facts and thus, as a result have very pathetic arguments." This statement, made by Carol Grey, a registered nurse and former president of the ProLife in Ch
