Kurt Cobain: Murder or Suicide?
Kurt Cobain's Death: Suicide or Murder? There are many theories surrounding Kurt Cobain's death. It was immediately ruled a suicide, but the amount of evidence that indicates murder is overwhelming. The police have no forensic evidence that proves his death was a suicide, whereas there is a substantial amount of evidence leading to murder being the cause of death. According to Tom Grant, "The official verdict of suicide was simply a rush to judgment which eventually painted the authorities as reports of so-called "copy-cat" suicides began making the news" (Investigation 2). In a survey conducted at Steller Secondary School in 2002, 17 out of 31 people said that Cobain killed himself. Five people were undecided, and nine thought he was killed. Nearly twice as many people think that Cobain wasn't killed but was murdered. Tom Grant, the investigator Courtney Love (Cobain's wife) hired in the days preceding Kurt's death said that "Courtney Love was facing a divorce-Kurt was in the process of leaving Seattle and his wife, Courtney, when he was found dead" (2). He also added that "Courtney knew that Kurt wanted out of the marriage. Just weeks prior to his death, she asked one of her attorneys to get her the meanest, most vicious d
On March 26th, 1994, Love left Seattle for the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills. Four days later, Cobain and his longtime friend Dylan Carlson purchased a shotgun in Carlson's name. Kurt had previously had all his guns confiscated by the police and was afraid of getting this one taken away as well. Cobain claimed he was afraid of intruders, so he bought a 20 gauge Remington that was recommend for home protection use because it wouldn't penetrate multiple walls (Grant 7). He took it back to his Lake Washington house so he would have it when get got back from Marina Del Ray Rehab which he left for that day. On April first, Love called the patient payphone at Marina Del Ray thirteen times, yet she told Grant that she only talked to him once (1). Later that day (the 14th) Love made plans with Grant to go to the carnation property to see if Cobain had been there. She told him that Eric Erlandson (Her band Hole's guitarist) was going along. After taking him into a room and talking to him, he quickly left. She said he was just going to meet them there. Grant, Love, and Kat Bjelland (Courtney's longtime friend) set out for Carnation. On the drive, she began ranting about the "son of a bitch who gave the story to the associated press saying she had overdosed" (Grant Investigation 9). Grant then reminded her that she had told him she planted the story. "Huh?..Oh" she responded and turned away (Grant Investigation 9). She had been caught in the midst of a lie and had no way out of it. By Sunday, April 3rd, Love had cancelled Cobain's credit card in hopes that it would help locate him. She met with Grant and told him that he had no access to money other then his card. When Grant questioned this, she said "This guy can't even catch a fucking cab by himself." Contrary to Love's statement, Cobain had managed to leave rehab, purchase a plane ticket, and arrange for a limousine to take him from the airport on his own. He seemed to be quite capable. By canceling his card, Love may have been attempting to prevent Cobain from doing whatever he wanted to do. Someone tried to charge $1,100 on the card this day, but it was denied. During a meeting at her hotel room with Grant, Love also divulged that the previous evening she had planted a story with the Associated Press that she had overdosed and was in the hospital. Her reasoning was that she thought it would make Cobain come to her. She also showed her disgust to Grant regarding Cobain turning down 9 million dollars to play the Lollapalooza tour. Love went on to tell Grant that she had no idea as to where Cobain was, although Cali had called her the day before to tell her he had stopped by. She continued to tell Grant that she thought Cobain wanted a divorce. She had Grant setup surveillance at several drug dealers' hangouts, but not at the Lake Washington Blvd. house where Cobain had been seen and dies two days later (Grant 3). Three weeks later, Love called Grant bragging that she was in Arizona sleeping with her ex-boyfriend Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins. That was only three weeks after her husband died. On April first, 1994, Cobain jumped the 6 foot wall of the Exodus Rehab center and bought a ticket to Seattle with his credit card. Earlier that day, he was visited by his friend Joe Mama, who said "I was ready to see him looking like shit and depressed. He looked so fucking great" (Rolling Stone 83). At 8:47 Cobain telephoned Love at the Peninsula Hotel and left a message. Grant says that it doesn't sound like a message from a person that was suicidal. Cobain arrived at the Seattle-Tacoma airport at 12:47 on the morning of the second. He was seen signing autographs and talking to other passengers as he approached Linda Walker of Seattle Limousines. That morning she drove him back to his Lake Washington Blvd. home. Cobain briefly spoke to Michael Dewitt (nicknamed "Cali"), the Cobains' nanny. Since Love still hadn't come into contact with Cobain, Cali informed her that day
