The Gray Area - Truth
Science-fiction writer, Michael Stravinsky, said “understanding is a three edged sword, your side, their side, and the truth.” In modern language and ethics, truth is categorize as a colorful word, yet cloaked in a gray area when it comes to meaning. Truth is not black and white, not merely the quality of having accuracy. Consider and ancient proverb, and its relation to the motion of truth. “A tree falls in the woods, with no one around, can man be sure it made a sound?” A man is guilty of murder, yet his lawyer argues the truth that his client is insane and had no knowledge of what he was doing. In this case the jury finds the man innocent. In society’s eye their system of beliefs, the truth, is that the man is innocent of the crime and is free from imprisonment. Truth is one-sided to the will of man and is unknown without human belief. Truth, as we thought we knew it, ceases to exist. Webster’s dictionary defines truth as “being free from deceit or falseness, having a quality of sincerity.” Truth has many connotations including purity, sincerity, morality, loyalty, and honesty.
