A detailed Summary of Paul's Case

The desire to live a better life than you already have happens mostly in middle-class families. Even I have the desire to live a life with more wealth. In the story by Willa Cather, "Paul's Case," Paul's passion for the theater and the arts influences him to want to live the life of the upper class. Paul soon realizes his own desire soon leads to his own destruction.

When Paul goes to school he causes a lot of misbehavior. He has no ambition on becoming a good student, which might have to do with his passion for the theatre. Many people usually don't have the patience and the determination to follow through with something, like school. We tend to want things to come at an instance, like becoming wealthy, which is why most gamble or play the lottery.

Paul's father receives notice that he has not been doing to well at school. To improve this dilemma, Paul's father decides that it would be best that Paul doesn't work at Carnegie Hall anymore. His father then goes to Carneg

Paul soon realizes that he can't go home after the paper published the story about him. His desire to live the life of the wealthy has gotten him into a lot of trouble. Paul then decides that he cannot return home anymore, because of the shame that he brought on his father and his family.

Paul then goes into the country to solve all of his problems. "The sound of an approaching train woke him and he started to his feet, remembering only his resolution, and afraid lest he should be too late."(Page 214) When the train came close enough he jumped right in front of it.

Before Paul got fired he was suppose to deposit money in the bank for his boss. "There was above two thousand dollars in checks, and nearly a thousand in the banknotes which he had taken from the book and quietly transferred to his pocket."(Page 209) It seems to me that Paul's desire to be wealthy influenced him to steal the money he was told to deposit.
