Business Ethics

A detailed Summary of Business Ethics

Hi, my name is Rusty and I you would not believe what I am going through at my new job. I just began work here at the Orlando International Airport as a security guard; it?s not bad considering I have been out of work for three months. I am married with two children, and let me tell you?they are a handful. Well, as I was saying, you would not believe what is going on at work; our passenger screening equipment has not been working properly. Obviously, this is not good; so I decided to tell my supervisor about the problem and he explained to me that I just need to forget about it and to get back to work. Apparently he had already told his boss, the head of airport security, who told him the same thing. My boss made it apparent that if I spoke up about the matter, I would most likely lose my job and be blacklisted from similar jobs with other security companies.

Lately, I have been losing a lot of sleep and I am not sure what to do with the situation at work. I know what I should do, but sometimes it is hard to make the right decision when the consequences are so harsh. However, as the 1 year anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy approaches I cannot stop thinking about all of the innocent lives that were lost.

First, I decided to do some research to see if I would possibly be protected by the government if I were to speak up. I found in the 2002 Florida Statutes, Title XVII, Chapter 252, it states that we should provide the means to assist in the prevention or mitigation of emergencies which may be caused or aggravated by inadequate planning for, and regulation of, public and private facilities and land use. I am pretty sure that if I were to take action and inform the State Legislature about the problem at work I would be looked at as a hero and not a villain. Even knowing this information my decision to speak up is not going to be an easy task. Although, now that I have the facts I can make a much wiser decision than if I had not done some research.

Fortunately, I believe one life is worth every single penny my decision will cost myself and everyone else?you cannot put a price on a human life. I also feel that people must lead by example; if you go with the flow you are worthless. These are my personal values and no matter what, I will always live by them. With every decision I make I try to make it with the influence of the Golden Rule; and if I do that, I rarely, if ever make a bad decision. There are always many choices you can make for every dilemma, but the one that is right will come from the heart.

I fear that if I do not speak up and do something I could be responsible for the loss of even more lives. I cannot afford to lose my job; but if other people?s lives are at stake, I will have to make that sacrifice.

Many people will be affected by my decision; these people are the stakeholders. I myself, my wife
