The movie we watched in class about the biologist Charles Darwin was indeed more interesting than most of the films I have viewed in a Science course. I found it to be quite entertaining when they switched back and fourth between past and present. The
actors that portrayed the characters necessary in Charles' life, such as Emma, his wife,
did a very nice job and the time period was portrayed effectively.
When I was watching the movie I felt more like I was enjoying what I was watching, not just paying attention for a future class discussion or quiz. It was fascinating to listen to the different people they had analyze Darwin and his motives, to hear their viewpoints and compare and contrast my own with theirs. I parti
cularly liked that they included more about Darwin's life than his theory of evolution. After all, he was much more than theories and science; he was a person, and it is important to remember this. (I also find the human relations aspect interesting.)
I found hearing about Darwin's struggles with the church fascinating, if not bothersome because the theory of evolution and my religion is something I try to avoid thinking about at the same time. In Darwin's day, individuality was not necessarily something that was praised, especially in the religion department. Slight disagreements with the church could result in charges, and great damage to social lives. Who wants to be associated with someone accused of treason? Darwin's theory was no small disagreement
