The Life of Henry Ford
The nineteen hundreds were a difficult time for most people living in the United States. The railroad was the biggest employer in the country. Most people living in this time period were poor. They were sharecroppers who still lived on their former "master's" land or freed slaves who had little or no education. Even though it was a difficult time quite a few of the technologies we enjoy today, were invented in the early nineteen hundreds. Henry Ford was one of the great inventors of that difficult time period. The oldest of six children Ford was born July 30, 1863 on a farm near Dearborn, Michigan. Ford attended a one-room schoolhouse until he was fifteen years old. While attending school he developed a strong dislike for farm work and a fascination for machinery. Ford left his family in 1879 and moved to Detroit to work as an apprentice machinist. Ford remained working as an apprentice machinist for three years, then returned to Dearborn to help out with the farm work. While at home he still found ways to work with engines and
After Ford's successes with the racecars Alex Y. Malcomson, a Detroit coal dealer, offered to help Ford start a new company, the result was the Ford Motor Company. Founded in 1903 with a small capitolization of only $28,000 supplied mostly by Malcomson. Ford was slowed down in 1938 by a stroke, but continued to run his company. Henry Ford's grandson Henry Ford the third took over the company after WW1. Henry Ford died on April 7, 1947 Through his failures and successes Ford got an idea for an inexpensive car for the masses. But his idea was thought crazy because people thought cars only for the rich. In 1899 the Detroit Edison Co. (Edison Illuminating Co.) forced Ford to choose between his job and automobiles. Ford chose cars, and later that year formed the Detroit Automobile Company. Which failed because he disagreed with his financial backers. He later formed the unsuccessful Ford Automobile Company, although Ford did gain some status with the building of racecars. Ford's last years were very hard. He never accepted the changes
