College Misconceptions

After graduating from high school the next step in life for many students is to attend college. Being a freshmen in college this year I was told about many stereotypes and I was given false information about how college life really is. With the given information and stereotypes I received, I already had my own view point about college before I even left for school. The wrong image of college can lead to a very rude awakening the first couple of weeks. The adjustment from high school to college can be very significant if you are not prepared. Some ideas that you create about college could actually impede on your success during the first semester.

A typical high school day is filled with trivial responsibilities that a majority of college students could almost sleep through. You wake up in the morning if you feel like it, and decide that you better get to school for another important day of learning. Upon arriving at school a couple minutes late you get slapped on the hand and told if you are late one more time you will get detention. After sleeping through your first hour class the bells ring and you walk out into the hallways and complain with all your friends how bad school really sucks. When lunch time rolls around

you eagerly go to the lunch room to fill your empty stomach. When sitting down you are surrounded by lunch room monitors who watch your every move. They must do this to show control and superiority over the younger and inferior students . When lunch is over you head to the second half of your day. In one of your classes you don't have your homework done and the teacher hassles you to get that in before you lose all the credit for the assignment. After deciding that you should maybe get the assignment done sometime you remember that you and your friends have plans tonight so the assignment is going to have to wait until another day. Towards the end of the day when you walk into your last hour class you realize that you have a test that you have totally forgotten about. You quickly rip out your notebook and skim over your notes before the teacher hands out the test. After the test in graded you find out you received and A-. Not bad for only studying 5 minutes right before the test was given out. When the school bells ring you happily walk out the doors almost like you are walking out of the doors of a prison. After meeting up with your friends you all agree that your are so glad school is finally done for the day. You continue this daily routine for the rest of the quarter and when you get your report card you astonishingly look down to read nothing but A's or B's.

Of course, this is not the case for everybody in college but can be related to by most college students. During your senior year of high school you are supposedly preparing yourself for your next year in college. For me, my senior year in high school was a joke. It should have been considered as a break before coming to college. My days were filled with classes that it did not even matter if I attended
