Sydney Carton, an alcoholic lawyer, is called upon to take the case of a French emigre named Charles Darnay, who has been falsely charged of treason. Charles is the nephew of the Marquis St. Evremonde, one of the most cruel aristocrats in France. The Marquis paid a man named Barsad to place the false charges on his nephew, who had fled to England to be out from under his tyranny.
