An Introduction to the Sport of Bowling

Many consider bowling to be a simple game, but it is actually a complicated sport.

To begin to understand why bowling is so complicated you will need a little back round information first. Such as the different kinds of lanes, what oil is, the different lane conditions, how to keep score, the different kinds of approaches, what ball reactions are, what the difference is between the three kinds of bowling balls, and how to bowl. (Richardson)

First you need to know that there are two different kinds of lanes. The most common type lane is the synthetic lane. This type of lane is called synthetic because it is actually man made imitation wood. The other type of lane is wood. Wood lanes are called wood lanes because they are made of wood. The synthetic lane is seen more often today since it is easier to maintain then the wood lane.(Richardson)

The synthetic lane is easier to maintain because the wood lanes have to have an oil finish on them to protect the lane from the ball when it is rolled on it. So since the balls are rolled over and over on the lane the oil wears away and has to be applied at least twice a day. Where as the synthetic lane are still oiled, but not to protect the lane. T

The next thing you need to learn is how to swing the ball properly. There are three types of wings. The first swing is the pendulum swing. This swing is a half circle that goes straight back and then straight while going forward. Then there is the lift up swing. In this swing you still do a half circle, but right before you release the ball you lift your body up to get some more speed and leverage on the ball. The third kind of swing is the roll swing. This type of swing is when you do the half circle, but right before you release the ball you get your body down with the ball and roll it smoothly. (Going for the Gold 2)

There are three categories of balls. The plastic ball, which is just what it sounds like, it is a ball made of hard plastic. The plastic ball is an older type of ball, but is still common today because it is a good ball for children to learn to bowl with because it is cheap. It can also be used as a spare ball for an advanced player because it goes straight. Then there is the urethane ball which is not made any more. This ball is just a plastic ball with a cover of urethane on its surface so that it would hock. The newest type of ball is the resin ball. This is the most common type of ball today because it will hock the most out of the three kinds of balls. (Going for the Gold 2)

The final thing you have to know is how to adjust. Adjusting is when you move your feet and or your target on the lane to compensate for too much hock or a lack of hock. The main idea behind adjusting is to move in the direction of the error. So if you the pocket, which is in-between the one pin and the three pin for right handers and in-between the one pin and the two pin for left handers, by four boards to the left you move your feet four boards to the left, and use the same target on the lane. You can also switch to a dull or shine ball depending on the direction of the error. (Going for the Gold 2)

Now that you know what the difference between the lane conditions is, and the difference between the kinds of balls is you can begin the process of learning how to bowl. The first step you have to take is to choose a ball. All three kinds of balls are not for every one so you have to choose depending on what you want the ball to do. If you are a beginner or want the ball to go straight you should get a plastic ball because it is cheap and it will go straight. If you would like a small reaction you would want to get a urethane ball. If you are an advanced player you want to go with the resin ball because you can get a varity of reaction out of the ball. (Going for the Gold 2)

Now that you have a ball you need to know the basics of bowling. The basics are your stands, your approach, your swing, your timing, your release, and how to adjust.

Next you have to choose the weight you want. Bowling balls come in six pounds to sixteen pounds. If you are from about three years old to five you should use a six-pound ball. Anyone from six years old to eight years old should use an eight-pound ball. For nine to thirteen year olds can use up to thirteen pounds, and anyone over thirteen can use up to sixteen pounds. All these w
