The Bluest Eyes
Pecola Breedlove is a twelve-year-old girl who is considered to be ugly and is traumatized by it. Throughout her life she searches for blue eyes because she thinks that she is able to obtain blue eyes she will be able to obtain beauty and therefore social acceptance. Pecola has no friends other then Claudia and Frieda and she is ridiculed by the other kids around town. She is abused by mostly everyone she comes in contact with and she is effected emotionally. Pecola never fights back because she does not have the inner strength for it so therefore she is always the victim. She lives in a society that says beauty is good and ugliness is bad, and without reassurance from her family right in the beginning her self-image of herself is extremely poor. Pecola is ostracized and rejected throughout her entire life and mostly due to her lack of beauty. She is rejected by her mother, the kids in her town, and eventually by society. Pecola Breedlove is rejected by her own flesh and blood, her mother. Pauline Breedlove has been rejected by society herself because at an early age she had stepped on a nail and so whenever she walked her foot flopped, but she takes out on her own rejecting by rejecting her daughter. It may have been nervousness, awkwardness, but the pan tilted under Pecola's fingers and fell to t the floor, splattering blackish blueberries everywhere. Most of the juice splashed on Pecola's legs, and the burn must have been painful, for she cried out and began hopping about just as Mrs. Breedlove entered with a tightly packed laundry bag. In one gallop she was on Pecola, and with the back of her and knocked her to the floor. Pecola slid in the pie juice, one leg folding under her. Mrs. Breedlove yanked her up by the arm, slapped her again, and in a voice thin with anger, abused Pecola directly(109). Her class would try to disregard her as much as possible and pretend as if Pecola never existed. Her school life was extremely hard and traumatic for her, because she had no one in class that she could turn to for help and guidance. Her class just adds to all the rejection she has had and continues her down the horrible path that she is taking. Not even her teacher helps her out through the difficult times and actually makes her class even worst then it already is. She can not find a sanctuary anywhere in her life, because every where she goes she has been rejected except for the three prostitutes China, Poland, and Maginot Line who are mother figures for Pecola since her own mother is an extremely poor one. Other then the brief time she is with these three everywhere else she sees rejection. Eventually she is rejected by the whole society itself. Society creates a perception of what is beautiful and what is ugly and they create a stereotype that being beautiful means that you are good and being ugly means you are bad. Pauline says, There in the dark her memory was refreshed, and she succumbed to her earlier dreams. Along with the idea of romantic love, she was introduced to another - physical beauty. Probably the most destructive ideas in the history of human thought. Both originated in envy, thrived in insecurity, and ended in disillusion,
