Ghandi
The book I choose to read was Mahatma Gandhi: His life and Influence, by Chandra Kumar and Mohinder Puri. This book proved to be an exceptional overview of the life and achievements made by Mahatma Gandhi. This book illustrates that the life and times of Mahatma Gandhi was remarkable and unforgettable. He changed so much for the people of India and for India herself. He brought them hope and accomplished more then anything, by using Non-violence, Truth and Honesty. "I am in the world feeling my way to light 'amid the encircling gloom'. I often err and miscalculate... My trust is solely in God. And I trust men only because I trust God. If I had no God to rely upon, I should be like Timor, a hater of my species." He brought them hope and allowed them to dream of a free India, which would be able to deal with her own problems, and enjoy her own success. In the beginning of the book the authors start of with the early years of Gandhi. Mohandas Gandhi was the third son born to Karamchand and Putlibai; Mohandas came from a very large extended family. He belonged to the third ranked Hindu caste system in India, which was the Vaishyas. His family had originally been grocers who later relinquished their traditional occupations and
"The world is weary of hate. We see the fatigue overcoming the Western nations. We see that this song of hate has not benefited humanity. Let it be the privilege of India to turn a new leaf and set a lesson to the world." (Kumar and Puri pg. 115) Through out all of Gandhi's life he wanted to make people understand that violence was not the way to do things, honesty and truth can change a lot. The book that I had chosen was Mahatma Gandhi: His life and Influence, by Chandra Kumar and Mohinder Puri. The book was very informative and detailed into the life of the great Mahatma Gandhi. It talked about everything that Gandhi had accomplished and the hardships he went through in his life to accomplish what he had. "In the land of his birth Mahatma is a living presence. He was able to unite the people of India, restore their sense of self- respect and prestige and release their energies in the cause of the nation's political struggle and social reform." (Kumar, Puri, pg103). I feel that the accomplishments made by Gandhi have shaped India into the country it is today and this book describes in great detail exactly how he accomplished this fate. Gandhi was an exceptional person with many great talents that will never be forgotten. "Under Gandhi's moral and spiritual and political leadership, the masses arose from their deep slumber and showed themselves capable of enormous, strength, courage, and a capacity to endure hardships, so essential for a successful non-violent campaign". (Kumar, Puri, pg103). In conclusion I can say that this book was very insightful into the life of Mahatma Gandhi and his impact in India.
