A detailed Summary of West Side Story


West Side Story transfers Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to present-day New York. The love story of Romeo and Juliet becomes that of Tony, a native-born Polish boy and Maria, a Puerto Rican girl newly arrived in America. They learn about each other and develop a strong relationship amongst street gangs in the city's West side. The feud between the houses of the Capulets and the Montagues is re-created in one involving two teen-age gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. In the play, things look good for the young lovers in the beginning, but when Tony--much like Romeo--accidentally kills his lover's br
