The sports management trip to the University of Maryland was to give us a view of the brand new Comcast Center. The purpose of the trip was for us to see the behind the scenes details of the arenas of a major Div. 1 college. I was very happy with how the trip when and the way we were shown this amazing arena. Getting to see one of the top 3 arenas in the country was something beyond belief. Chapter 13 talks about facility management, which is one of the reasons we went on the trip. The University of Maryland will be changed dramatically by the addition of this arena.
The first Maryland site I will talk about is the Comcast Center. This 125 million-dollar arena was built to be the best in the country. The arena can hold almost 18,000 fans, an upgrade from the old arena Cole Field House. This arena will be used for Men and Women's basketball; the secondary gym will be used for volleyball, wrestling, and gymnastics. That gym has a 1,500 seating capacity and has all the facilities
Cole Field house is the old venue for Maryland's basketball. It held 14,000 fans, which is still a good number. This arena had to be replaced for a number of reasons. First of is that the arena was not ADA compliant which was making it a threat of a lawsuit. Another reason that it needed to be replaced was that it was built in the 60's and with a lot of the Div. 1 schools new arenas are popping up making recruitment harder on the university. Putting 125 million into an arena where all student athletes will get use out of it shows prospective students that the university cares about its athletics.
It is very clear that the University of Maryland is very supportive of its athletic programs and it shows by the venues that they give their athletes to use. This trip was very educational because it showed us what it takes to run these arenas and stadiums and how putting themselves in new facilities will help bring money and prestige to the school.
