Society perceives the artist in many ways, but stereotypically the artist is viewed as a somewhat alternative person, perhaps a little crazy, free-spirited, intense or different. Being an artist is not about approval from a gallery, other artists or society. People who perceive an artist only as someone who is widely recognised, obtain a very narrow view of the art world and would be likely to miss out on viewing a lot of art work that is both impressive and meaningful. Creating a piece of artwork is a personal procedure, one which should not be approached simply to gain the approval of others which won't necessarily get them to give you the title of an artist anyway.
