this country to seek freedom, and have better opportunities. They want to get away from their totalitarian state, where they were controlled by every realm of life. In this "Promised Land" they are not under any oppression, they have equality, the "opportunities are swirling dizzily, promiscuously, around them." Along with the opportunities, come the worries. When these bewildered settlers came here for the first time everything is strange to them. They were "dazed, disoriented," and it appears as though they were "several time zones away-or centuries away." They do not know what to do, where to turn to for help. They filled their minds with uncertainties. They think in horror when they spend their money. This new world exposed them to reality.
