What is there to be said about stereotyping in the media?

Stereotyping is very common in the media nowadays. It is shown throughout the media, in television, newspapers and radio, usually in the news. Stereotyping is in every newspaper, although only usually gets noticed in a big nationwide/worldwide story, such as the "September 11th" stories in the newspapers and also on the television, they stereotyped Arabs/Afghans as all being terrorists, and what was before a race accepting country, had now turned into what was a racist, stereotyping country. I suppose now most of it has died down and all the hype of it has gone, but for those few months after the attack, these minority groups were outcast from society, even children were discriminated against in schools, after what they had heard on television. This is a negative part of stereotyping; that children who watch parts of the news and/or hear their parents talking about how this Afghan/Arab man had attacked America and killed lots of people. They then, after hearing this, unintentionally stereotype these people as terrorists and people who kill other people, and also then, doing what they think is right, discriminate any people in their school/class that are from that minority group. Therefore concluding that stereotyping in the media

can influence children but also adults too.

Stereotyping in the media can also be a good, positive thing. For example, stereotyping can be extremely useful for film producers, film makers and the script-writers, as stereotyping can help these people develop certain characters, and also it makes it a lot easier to portray a certain person in a film if they are a stereotype. For example in the film The Mexican, they obviously stereotyped Mexicans, now this could be seen as a bad thing by Mexicans, because they may think they are not being portrayed as truly as they'd like, but for the producers of the film it is clearly a good thing, as a person in a film who is of certain stereotype, i.e. The Mexican, can be shown clearer, and maybe a lot more interesting that someone who is not a stereotype, because then it is a lot harder to portray a person then, and also the audience would find it harder to relate too.

Smirnoff Ice also used this "practical joker of a lad" stereotype to sell their product, but they slightly changed it, for example, one certain advert had this guys friend come over, and then seconds later his Mum arrived, his friend then looked at her and recognised her from a party or something where it implies that they had met and perhaps done someth
