The Heros of Medieval Period
Since the beginning of time there have been heroes. Some heroes maybe fictional and some heroes maybe actual true to life heroes who have been a hero to their people or a hero to their country. In the Anglo-Saxon period, which took place about 600 B.C. and spanned over six centuries, there was the hero Beowulf who saved his group of people from a horrific monster named Grendel. In the Medieval Period Robin hood and King Arthur were portrayed as the heroic individuals. Even though living in the same time period Robin Hood and King Arthur had many attributes that were not alike and they also had a variety of attributes that were similar. The Robin Hood Ballads are the type ballad that epitomizes the exemplary English yeoman. Robin Hood is well mannered, Self-respecting, chivalrous, devout, and carefree hero. As a defender of the weak and an enemy of the oppressor, Robin Hood "stole from the rich and gave to the poor". An example of this can be seen when Robin approaches a young man and ask him if he had any money, the young man replied "I have no money, but five shillings and a ring that I have kept seven long years to have it at my wedding." The young man was supposed to marry a young maid the day before, however;
The death of Authur is unknown, however; Authur was betrayed by his nephew. Just like Robin Hood was betrayed by his cousin who cut his wrist and left him to die. Although Authur did not die from the betrayal of his Nephew he was hurt. Robin Hoods Heroism was shown by his supporters, his actions, and his men. Little John, the side kick to Robin, supported Robin Hood and did anything Robin wanted him to do. Robin hood had a group of guys which also supported Robin and did as he instructed them to. Robin Hood was famous for "stealing from the poor and giving to the needy". Robin Hood would "never hurt a woman or hurt a man in a woman's presents". He explains this to Little John when Little John wants a "boon" from Robin to burn a nunnery down. the maid was taken to be a knights delight. Robin asked the young man how he would repay him if he got the maid back for the young man whose name was Allen-a-Dale. Allen-a-Dale stated "no gold no fee. I will swear upon a book a servant to be". Robin Hood went on to gain the maid back, and give her to Allen-a-dale. King Authur's heroism was also shown through his supporters, his actions, and his men. Authur was promised to Merlin the sorcerer, because of granting a wish to Authur's biological father. Merlin later on became a great advisor to Authur. "The Archbishop of Canterbury, by Merlin's advice gathered those knights whom Pendragson had loved and trusted most...all these and many more stayed near to Authur day and night to protect him". This quote also proves how the Knights of the Round Table protected King Authur. The Knights of the Round Table were Authur's men. Authur was famous for many things.
