My Tutoring Experience
My placement site is at Lowrey Middle School, in Ms. Taylor's 6th and 7th grade life management class. Lowrey School is located at 6601 Jonathan, Dearborn, Mi 48126.This class is mostly a hands on learning experience for students about some of the tasks they will need and use in the future. The classroom is a combination kitchen, and sewing room. The kitchens have most of the equipment a real kitchen at home would have. The sewing room has real sewing machines for all students to sew projects. The teacher's desk is located in the center in between the two rooms and it is where all of the demonstrations are shown. The classroom gives the students a sense of realism but maintains a learning atmosphere. In the time I am helping Ms.Taylor; I assist her with two classes, a 6th grade class and a more advanced seventh grade class. In each class, there's an average of twenty four students, surprisingly, there is a very large number of boys in the two classrooms. In the sixth grade class, they learn about such things as sewing by hand, cooking some basic foods, and most importantly, teamwork. In the seventh grade class, students have harder projects, such as sewing on the machine and cooking mor
A typical day in the sixth grade class would be everyone at their seats with their materials. When I come in, Ms. Taylor gives me an overview of what the students are doing that day. Then, while she gives directions for the day, I pay attention so I can know how to help students correctly, during the class period, I check if everyone has their materials and is on task. I also help students when they need it and make sure I get to lead them on the right track. In the seventh grade class, they tend to be a little more self dependent, yet they still need help. Help such as a difficult time with the sewing machine is an everyday job for me. In the seventh grade class, I spend most of my time helping out the two bilingual students with their work and interpreting to them the teacher's directions. At the end of the day, Ms. Taylor gives me an idea about what we will be doing with the students next. My bilingual skills are very important to contributing the help the students. Interpreting what is required to the bilingual students in Arabic is necessary for their learning. Also you must give the students a sense that you have some authority, while developing a friendship. Students are not always on their best behavior, and dealing with those students is a task on its own. Being assertive and taking author
