Anorexia

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder in which the people affected, most commonly women, refuse to ear. This starving of the body leaves the person vulnerable to many other diseases and ultimately, can be fatal. Doctors may prescribe force-feeding of the anorexic in order to save life.

Should force-feeding of the anorexic be allowed?

People who intentionally starve themselves suffer from an eating disorder called anorexia nervosa. The disorder, which usually begins in young people around the time of puberty, involves extreme weight loss - at least 15 percent below the individual's normal body weight. Many people with the disorder look skinny but are convinced they are overweight. Sometimes they must be hospitalized to prevent starvation.

Food and weight become obsessions. For some, the compulsiveness shows up in strange eating habits or the refusal to eat in front of others. It's not uncommon for people with anorexia to collect recipes and prepare meals for family and friends

but not join in the meals themselves. They may take up strict exercise routines to keep off the unwanted weight. Loss of monthly menstrual periods is typical in women whereas men with anorexia often become impotent.

Force-feeding is another way into treating this severe disorder. This method is only used when the individual will not eat under any circumstances, even after all the medications and treatment known have been tested. A common way of force feeding is using the drip where the nutrients are being drip-fed into the body via a tube.
