Every person in this world feels the necessity of been loved at least one time in their life. Blanche feels this necessity and she tried to make herself loved but she has failed. Blanche arrives in New Orleans in a streetcar with only one desire; to find someone who would love her. Her sister, Stella, was her only family member left; and Blanche goes to her in order to find a solution for her problems. Blanche lives in a world of illusions that she uses to hide from the real world.
In the first scene we notice Blanche is very nervous and drinking alcohol to elude her reality. Then she tells her sister about the lost of Belle Reve, the family mansion. In this scene we see that she felt guilty for her personality. She uses many arguments trying to justify the lost of Belle Reve. The first encounter we see between Blanche and Stella was not good at all. Blanche starts criticizing the conditions in which Stella lives. Blanche wants the best for her sister and she does not want that her sister to suffer the way she did. Until this moment Stanley has not sympathized with Blanche, also he hates her because she wants to change the way they lived. Blanche in her confusion, flirts with Stanley many times during her visit to Stella's house. Stanley does not return any feeling of love towards Blanche, instead he rapes her.
The play finished with the phrase "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers". Blanche lets us know that the only person that had showed some care for her was not her family. Her sister abandoned her and her parents died when she was very young. The man who has promised to be to her side has committed suicide.
