Hemmingway: Style Analysis

The 20th century was a time of great struggles; it was a time of great battles; it was a time of great authors. One of the most influential and profound authors of that time period is a war veteran named Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway gains fame by his unique method and style of writing; he exploits his themes and symbols with precise syntax and diction. He aims to eliminate everything in his novels that is unnecessary such as adverbs and adjectives. Hemingway constantly uses symbols to demonstrate his themes as well as conflicts throughout his novels. He often creates a theme on a code hero, a Hemingway hero, who must display grace under pressure in order to become a man; he often produced a directionless generation that disregards all conventional values as a result of war. As an author, Ernest Hemingway is recognizable, but his novels are unmistakable due to the distinguishable context of his books.

The element of writing that separates Hemingway from mediocrity is his unique style of writing. Hemingway's style is simple, direct, and unadorned, which is most likely a refection of his newspaper writing. He evades using adjective and adverbs whenever possible and places a great deal of emphasis on nouns because

Indigenous to most of Hemingway's novels is the concept of the "Hemingway hero" or the code hero, which is a fictional character whose life appeals strongly to the American man. The Hemingway hero is man's man; he is a man who involves himself in a great deal of drinking; he is a man who moves from one love affair to another; he is a man who participates in game hunting; he is a man who thrives on the joy of bullfights; he is a man that the typical American male dreams of becoming one day. Through each novel, the reader is able to formulate a theory about the code hero in which he will live up to, but ironically the code hero never states the honorable code that he follows. The Hemingway hero is a man of action rather than a man of theory; he does not preach his beliefs, but displays them through his achievements. A basis for all of the actions of all Hemingway key heroes is the concept of death; the idea of death permeates or lies behind all of the characters' actions in Hemingway's novels. A man is to face total oblivion at his death, there is nothing to do but enjoy as many physical pleasures as possible during his life. Thus, the Hemingway hero drinks, he makes love, he enjoys all sensuous pleasures that are given to him; the code hero lives day to day, moment by moment on action not by an agenda. Although death is inevitable, the rewards of life must not blind the hero from the task at hand, he must avoid death at all cost even though death maybe the only escape from the harsh reality of life. Hemingway often places his code hero in a situation in which he must confront his conflict; a situation in which he encounters danger; a situation in which he faces death. The ultimate test of the code hero is how he reacts when dealing with danger or death; he must display his manhood by displaying grace, discipline and fearlessness. The Hemingway man must be able to take control of a bullfight, sustain order in war, and maintain a level of integrity when sailing the dangerous oceans of the world. A man who encounters death, who faces danger at any cost; a man who is constantly being tested while withstanding the pressures in an orderly fashion will prove to be a true Hemingway hero.

he prefers the concrete versus the abstract. His unique style of precise diction aims toward the active reader because he avoids prolonging an idea with useless detail; he seeks for his point or idea to be discovered, and then lets the reader put the pieces of the puzzle together and proceeds with the story. He uses exact detail to foreshadow upcoming conflicts as well as paint a vivid picture of the setting in the mind of the reader. When there is "a hurricane" then the "signs" are re
