The setting is a very pleasant and serene one. They are sitting around the fire discussing the things on their mind. This represents that they are calm and peaceful themselves. Also, that they each have a special glow to them. The fact that they want to spend their money on their mother instead of themselves shows that they are very generous. They think about others before themselves. You can also see that they love and miss their father very much and are anxious about his return home. They don't care about money only happiness.

They were all very surprised to find the gifts under their pillows. The journals signify that writing is going to play a part in one of the girls' lives. They fact that they give up their breakfast to someone else even though they were hungry show that they are kind and caring. Mr. Laurence sending those gifts shows that even though he doesn't talk to them much he still knows and cares that they are their. It also shows that he is a very kind and generous man. Jo wanting to get to know the Laurence boy foreshadows many events to come. Having Christmas as the setting signifies happiness, and joy. This also signifies that everyone is in a happy, giving type of mood.


Jo not wanting Amy to go to the theatre with her and Meg shows that Jo doesn't like to "hang out" with her younger siblings. Amy threatening Jo foreshadows that she's going to do something that will enrage Jo. The next day Jo realized that her writing book was gone and Amy had burned it. Jo was so angry that she vowed never to speak to Amy again. This shows that Jo's book is her prized possession and it means very much to her. Amy following Jo and Laurie to the skating ring shows that she doesn't want Jo to stay mad at her. Jo rescuing Amy when she fell into the ice shows that even though she's mad at Amy she still loves her very much. In the end everyone makes up which shows that Jo cares very much and knows she was in the wrong.

Beth helping out more than everyone else shows that she cares a lot, and wants to keep things as they should be. The fact that she goes to help the Hummel baby shows that she also wants to do her mother's jobs while she is gone. She wants to help as her Mother did. They baby dying in Beth's arms shows that Beth wasn't worried about becoming sick. She just wanted to comfort the baby as much as she could. Amy being the only one sent away shows that they all care for her and don't want to risk her getting sick. Amy only agreeing because of Laurie's promise shows that she looks up to Laurie and knows he'll bring her news. Beth's sickness foreshadows that something bad is going to happen. Them not telling their mother right away shows that they don't want to worry their mother more than she already is. The doctor telling them to have their mother come home foreshadows that something bad is going to happen. The fact that Laurie already sent for mother shows that he knew she was needed at home. Beth feeling better is a sign that things are going to start getting better.
