Choosing the characters for a book is a very important part because the characters are control. The character is similar to an author and creates the future of every story. Being able to select a character that will fulfill the duty is what makes a writer exceed above their peers.

Characters that lighten up a serious situation are always a good choice. These characters act as emotional support for the reader and add interest to dull moments. Faulkner chose characters like these to contrast each other and give the reader numerous points of view. Darl from As I Lay Dying is actually sent to an asylum in the story as a type of irony or anger from his family (254). Another trait of the characters Edgerton uses are desires the reader can relate to. Often author's forget what humans feel they need. Edgerton shows sexual desire through Meredith's thoughts(267). Edgerton also allows his characters to release stress through cursing. After Meredith's accident, he often curses at himself and other people to show us the extent of his anger(219). Many authors stay away from both of these topics because a fear of censorship, but this style of characters could attract many people who would not normally read this type of story.
