Characters that lighten up a serious situation are always a good choice. These characters act as emotional support for the reader and add interest to dull moments. Edgerton also allows his characters to release stress through cursing. After Meredith's accident, he often curses at himself and other people to show us the extent of his anger(219). Many authors stay away from both of these topics because a fear of censorship, but this style of characters could attract many people who would not normally read this type of story.
