Mercy or Homicide

Webster's Dictionary defines euthanasia as: "the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relatively painless way for reasons of mercy." The questions people often ask are should euthanasia be permitted or legal? Is euthanasia selfish as like most suicides? Who's choice should it be? This is a topic with no real answer, but it is only based on people's beliefs and or opinions. As for my opinion, I believe that euthanasia should be allowed and legalized, with some stipulations. I believe that to receive euthanasia you must be a legal adult, be of sound mind, be medically proven to be eligible, and if you are unable to make these decisions family and doctors will make it for you. As you read, I will give examples along with my opinion on why euthanasia should be legalized.

For the first example, man in his mid-sixties contracts a disease. Doctors tell he and his family that he has only a small chance of living more than five years. The man is constantly in extraordinary pain and doctors say there is nothing that they can do, and that the pain will never go away. The man no longer wants to live, for the pain is too excruciating, but his family wants to

In this case I don't think euthanasia is appropriate, because the person in question is only a child and he has no say as to what is to happen to him. Only parents and doctors should make this choice, together. I also feel that if there is any chance for a person's disease to be cured, or at least, contained they should not have the option to euthanasia.

The last example is of a man is in a coma, has very little brain activity, and doesn't respond to any forms of stimuli. He is an organ donor and his blood type matches another patient in need. He has no immediate family that could be contacted to make the decision on whether or not he should be left on life support. The doctors feel that it is in best interest, that he be taken off life support to help the other patients in need.

In this case I believe that euthanasia is a rational choice, because the person in pain no longer wants to live, and because he is a legal adult, he should have that option. If for some reason the man was unable to make a rational decision, I believe that his family would have to make the decision for him. If a person no longer has the will to live and they are in pain, why should they not have the choice to medically end their life?

In this scenario I believe that if there is absolutely no person to contact to make the decision on the man's life, and he has no brain activity, I believe that the doctor should use euthanasia.
