Voice over IP - Future of Communications

Global communications has become a must for all sectors of business and life for our world today. With the spreading use of the Internet, people across the globe are able to communicate. This paper will address the growing use of a technology to upgrade our old PSTN system of voice communications. This technology builds off the same technology we use today with our computers and the Internet. To begin I will give an overview of the Global PSTN infrastructure from regions across the globe. Next moving into a more technical look at the technology. And finally, seeing how this new technology will affect our current Global PSTN. This technology that will change voice communications is Voice Over IP or VoIP.

Today's global economy is starving for information transmissions. Timeliness of that speed is a must. With the old PSTN networks limited to just voice, and not able to send Data/Voice/Video, a need for a new way has grown. Flexibility is also available with VoIP systems compared to PSTN, so that future technology can be adopted and implemented with less troubles. Now let's look at a few countries and regions.

Egypt, the second most sophisticated economy in Africa, has been taking major steps

As you can see, the telecommunications companies are leading the way. They have recognized the need to offer different services to corporate America as technology increases. As for vendors of the hardware equipment that you can get from your service providers, the following companies have committed full swing behind VoIP product lines:

VoIP to work within your business will need to have one of the gateways to change your voice into digital packets to be sent to your carrier. Cisco is one of the major players in the field of networking and they are committed to the implementation of VoIP across the globe. But the heart of VoIP is its protocol.

VoIP will eventually grow to become a standard across the globe, but as the way the Internet has grown to be the standard source of quick information. Timeline for VoIP to be global really depends on the nations across the globe. As in the examples earlier of Egypt, Russia, and Western Europe, we see different results. With Egypt moving towards a more privatized communications system, they will bring in more capital investments to enable VoIP systems. Egypt will use VoIP in more of a business sense rather than residential because of the poor state of living in the nation. (African Connection) Russia is still seeking an effective method to grow economically. The continued effort to privatize sectors of industrial once controlled by the state will only aid in further advancement. Once Russia can stabilize their economy and attract more investors, they will see a slow and gradual move to VoIP. (Sokolov) And finally Western Europe, like the United States, has a strong backing for its technology sectors especially in the cellular realms. Tough hurtles could happen if the nations of the EU cannot agree on a universal standard to use for VoIP. Only a continued strong growth of cooperation among the nations can ensure the quick adoption. Globally, VoIP has a lot of potential to aid in the spread of a global economy. Though as in the industrial then the technology booms, many of the poor nations across the globe may have difficulties keeping up. Only through outside investments and a global financial aid, can keep the world be totally ready for the switch from PSTN to the world of VoIP.

11. Once the session is terminated, the PBX removes the number-to-IP-host mapping from memory. "

You can see that the use can be very similar to our current methods, but the underlying backbone of the system is very different. The key to this system is the gateway and the communications with your exchange carrier, who in many cases is your ISP.

Technical Discussion of VoIP and IP Telephony

Right now the major standard protocol for VoIP is the H.323 family. H.323 has been around a while and has been updated as technology advancements are made. Some of the basic concerns of the protocol are: authentication, encryption, integrity, and nonrepudiation. Another component of H.323 is the gatekeeper function. This function controls access to the endpoints of the communications and flow controls. Gatekeeper function in normally located in the Gateways, which makes sense for the name. (Willis, David)
