Behavioral dispositions change from time to time and place to place. A trait is the tendency of an individual to act consistently in a characteristic way it is a cross-situated individual difference. For example, if a person is happy most of the time, then happiness would be one of the person's traits. Trait theories tend to identify a manageable number of personality characteristics that can represent fundamental personality differences. Traits are hierarchically organized. The most current popular approach of studying traits is Cattell's 16 PF Personality Profile and Eyseneck's Big Five Personality Factors (he extended traits developing them into personality types, superset factors)
