Before 1968 there was no federal law concerning divorce. Therefore, in that following year the Federal Government passed the Divorce Act. This Act outlined a specific fault grounds for divorce and different waiting periods for separated couples; it also recognized a 3-year separation or marriage breakdown as a new ground for divorce. In 1985, the Parliament passed the Divorce Act, which came into effect on June 1, 1986.
