Lord of Flies essay

The setting for the book "Lord of the flies" is on a tropical island somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. The time is not given but since there is a lot of talk about being their plane being shot down and "a bomb", that it was supposed to take place near the end of World War II and the bomb possibly being the tom bomb. When the plane crashed the only adult, the pilot, died thus leaving all the children to fend for themselves on the island.

Ralph (also known as the fair-haired boy) is one of the older boys on the island who tries to do his best in the worst possible situations. He is thin and average height for his age, has fair hair and a scar on his for head from the plane crash. No one knows to much about Ralph's past, the only thing known of his life prior to the island is that his father was an officer in the British navy. Ralph always tries to keep everyone together and organized but "The hunters" end up convincing mostly everyone to join their tribe Leaving Ralph, Piggy, Sam, and Eric "samneric" alone. Ralph only ally that lasts through most of the book is Piggy, although he some times teases him he feels responsible when he is killed by Jack.

Jack is tall and lean boy who is head of the choir who's orderly and sneak

Ralph turned and took in a girl of about nineteen with his own fair hair and green eyes. The young woman was about a foot taller than he was. It took Ralph another moment to recognize his cousin Angela.

"Are you hungry?" Angela asked cheerfully. "Let's go get some dinner."

"Will I ever be normal again, Angela? Will I ever trust people?" He asked. Angela looked down at Ralph. He was staring up at her, looking much like a little boy. Angela gave him a weak smile.

Finally, the fire is lit again, the pig is roasted, and everyone eats. The hunters reenact the hunt, with a wild tribal dance and one boy being the pig; this is the first time of many that the dance is performed.

All the young children, however, are preoccupied with the Beast, which they still believe in as some kind of animal living on the island. Jack says that he's been everywhere, and there is no beast, and Piggy says that a beast can't exist in a world with science. However, a littl'un still steps up and says that he saw something horrid in the forest (which was actually Simon returning in the dark from his peaceful area).
