Narrative essay
September 26, 1999, I took my son in for his two-month check up. When I got there, the receptionist said, "Dr. Welsh is gone for the day, but Dr. Spangler would be happy to see him." Little did I know that this slight change in plans would change my life forever. When I went to the hospital to be induced for labor, I was extremely excited. I knew when we walked out there would be three people instead of two. I was induced around 2:00 A.M. Finally, after an hour and a half of labor, Jaden LeRoy Olson was born. His umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck twice, and he was not breathing. The doctors took him right away. Within a few minutes he was crying, and so was I. When the nurse handed him to me she said, "He's just fine, you have a healthy eight and a half pound baby boy!" The next day when they brought Jaden back to me after his bath, I was being nosey and looked at his medical chart. In the complications area there was a comment, it said that he had a heart murmur. My heart dropped, I looked at Jaden and started bawling. Adam, Jaden's dad, asked me what was wrong. I showed him the clipboard, and he reassured me that he was fine. If there was something really wrong they would tell me, right?
They did a four hour long ultrasound that day. The doctor came back in to review it and then told us what was wrong. The artery going from his heart to his long was way too small. It should have been the size of a pen, it was the size of a pin. There were a few other things wrong, the walls around his heart were too large and his valves were too small, no serious threat. He gave us a list of hospitals and told us to start thinking about were we wanted him to go to get a balloon put in his heart. Dr. Spangler put his hand on my shoulder and said, "Don't worry there are very good surgeons out there and I have a really good feeling about this, he's going to be just fine." We would have to come back once a week until he had surgery. I wanted to believe every word he said. It was really hard. Two weeks later he needed to go in for his next check up. Adam was unable to come so I thought that this would be a perfect time to bring up this bothersome problem once again. He did the routine check up and this time Jaden had to get his first shots. Doctor Welsh told me all of the side affects such as, crankiness soreness in his leg and of course he may run a slight temp. When he was all done, I said "I'm sure you are sick of me asking you this, but would you please listen to his heart one more time? There is something bothering me inside, I can't explain it, I think its mother intuition." He looked at me and said, "It would only be mothers' intuition if there was something wrong." And then began listening to his heart. That made me so mad. I could believe that he would say that, maybe I did look like an overprotected mom, but I was a first time paranoid mom. Once again he looked and me and said "I still do not hear anything." Only this time he said it with anger in his voice he also added, "If you do not trust me, why am I your doctor?" I didn't know what to say. I just sat there like a five-year-old little kid who had just disappointed his teacher. The next few weeks
