George Lucas

Unless you have lived in a cave all your life, you have probably heard the name George Lucas. Lucas, the man behind the Force, totally renovated special effects in movies. He is known for such movies as Indiana Jones, American Graffiti, and his most famous achievement is the Stars Was Saga.

George Lucas JR. was born on the 14th of May 1944 in Modesto, CA. When Lucas was a teenager he was very interested in racing. During a race he crashed and suffered a crushed lung. George spent the last half of his senior year in a hospital bed. After he graduation he attended the University of Southern California in Los Angles. During his college years at USC he made several movies that achieved awards. He received the most prestige prize was for the short film THX-1138 in 1965 at the National Student Film Festival. He later became Francis Ford Coppolas protege and under the making of The People Rain Lucas was production assistant. He also made the making of the movie. In 1971 Coppola helped Lucas to finance THX-1138 that was an expanded version of the short film he made in college.

In 1973 he made his first long film American Graffiti. This film is considered to be one of the biggest successes of low budget filmm

In 1977 Lucas released is a film starting with a very well known phrase perhaps one of the most famous phrase: "A long time ago in a Galaxy far far away". This film plus two sequels turned out to be the biggest films of Lucas's career. Star Wars (A New Hope 1977), Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi stared Mark Hamil, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Sir Alec Guiness, Anthony Daniels, Peter Cushing, David Prowes, Peter Mayhew, and James Earl Jones as the voice of Darth Vader. These three films have earned the most money thru out the film history. The question you may be asking yourself is, were did he get all the inspiration to make this magnificent trilogy and why is it still today so popular? It all began back in his hometown Modesto, during his youth he watched Saturday serials such as "Adventure Theatre" that would show Flash Gordon. In the beginning of the 70s he started to write the Star Wars saga. When it was finished he showed the manuscript to United Artists but they turned him down just as Universal did. He then went to 20th Century Fox and they approved it due to the fact that they loved American Graffiti. The manuscript was much larger than Lucas had originally thought so he broke it up into three parts. He laid the other two parts on the shelf and thought of them as a great future project. Lucas needed the best special effects people in the world, so he hired Industrial Light and Magic. This company has been a part of some of the most famous films in history like Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, and Forrest Gump. Most of ILM crewmembers were 20 years old. With the ILM Company he could finally start direction Star Wars with a budget of 10 million dollars. Today a normal film costs 20-30 million dollars.

You can draw parallels between George Lucas and Luke Skywalker. In the first film Luke is stuck on his planet with his Uncle Owen, who wants Luke to live on Tatooine and take over the farm, just like how George was stuck in a hospital bed after his wreck. Obi-Wan Kenobi helps Luke just as Francis Ford Coppola helped Lucas. The Stars Wars Trilogy was way before its time. Critics believed that Star Wars would be forgotten in years to come, other films such as Independence Day may have been forgotten but Star Wars will always be remembered.

On the 25th of May 1977 Star Wars premiered in the United States. Lucas first thought that the film would be a fiasco but a friend called him and said that it was an enorm
