Got Long Distance?

Two young people hold each other close, tears streaming down both their faces as people bustle around the two on their way to catching an airplane. The couple attempts to say goodbye, but the words just don't want to come out. "You have to get on the plane," she sobs to him. He replies, "I know, but I can't leave you." He holds her close for one last time and boards the plane, knowing he won't see her for two months, possibly more. For many freshmen, this is a common sight: high school sweethearts, trying to make it through college even though they have picked colleges far apart. When they arrive at school, there are two things every person on campus will ask them: 1."Do you think he/she is the one?" 2."You know long distance never works, right?" For the past nine months, I have been one of these many freshmen struggling to balance school life and maintaining a long distance relationship. Those two questions have become my least favorite words to hear. In this essay I will share the ins and outs of long distance relationships. For those who are in a relationship for the long haul, this essay will let you know you are not alone and maybe give you a little advice for when the going gets a little rough. For those who hav

Now, if you are one of those people who go around saying long distance doesn't work, who do you think you are? Maybe long distance didn't work for you, but as for the rest of us, we want to give it a shot for ourselves. First and foremost, long distance can and does work. I am sick and tired of people forever telling me I am going to have to give up my favorite person because we go to school in different states. Granted, being fifteen hundred miles away from each other does make the relationship a little more interesting, but we are just like any other couple, aside from the fact that we only see each other once every one or two months. There are a few things, however, to keep in mind if you plan on starting a long distance relationship any time soon. These things are your phone bill, time management and perspective.

The first thing to keep in mind is a phone bill. Phone bills are the curse of every poor college student, especially those who are in long distance relationships. Fortunately for us, the Internet has been invented. Instant messenger (IM) is a great way to keep in touch with not only your significant other, but also other friends from high school. There will be times, however, that words on a screen will just not do. Plan ahead for those times. Budget a certain amount of time each month so you don't break the bank talking to your sweetie until two o'clock in the morning.

The last thing to keep in mind is perspective. When you are in a long distance relationship, problems tend to amplify. Whether or not you actually have big problem, it will appear to be one. The farther the distance, the bigger the problem will seem. Take a deep bre
