Got Long Distance?
Two young people hold each other close, tears streaming down both their faces as people bustle around the two on their way to catching an airplane. The couple attempts to say goodbye, but the words just don’t want to come out. “You have to get on the plane,” she sobs to him. He replies, “I know, but I can’t leave you.” He holds her close for one last time and boards the plane, knowing he won’t see her for two months, possibly more. For many freshmen, this is a common sight: high school sweethearts, trying to make it through college even though they have picked colleges far apart. When they arrive at school, there are two things every person on campus will ask them: 1.“Do you think he/she is the one?” 2.“You know long distance never works, right?” For the past nine months, I have been one of these many freshmen struggling to balance school life and maintaining a long distance relationship. Those two questions have become my least favorite words to hear. In this essay I will share the ins and outs of long distance relationships.
