Is it Worth It?

How much does television mean to you? Would you sacrifice your mind, your health, and your well-being just to keep a hold of it? Most people would. They are unaware of the severe effects that TV has on our lives and on our future. I think that television should be banned from all American households because of the negative ideas it exploits, the creative minds it destroys, and the growing amount of kids and adults that are making this place a bigger and lazier country.

In the last decade, the amount of violence on television has greatly increased and so has the number of senseless homicides and suicides in our country. Now these may or may not be related to each other, but the promiscuity and violence shown regularly on household televisions has intrigued us Americans and numbed our sense of what is right and what is wrong in society. What shocked us at first has now become customary dinner-time cinema.

In the last decade, the amount of violence on television sets in America, more and more young people have been robbed of their creativity. With TV, hardly anything is left to the imagination. Before the existence of television, all people were forced to create their own opinions and images of things in their own minds.

Unlike reading, the pace of the television experience cannot be controlled by the viewer; he cannot slow down a delightful program or speed up a dreary one. The images move too quickly for someone to analyze them in the full depth that they are. He cannot use his own imagination to invest the people and events portrayed on the screen with the personal meanings that would help him understand and resolve relationships and conflicts in his own life; he is under the power of the show creators' imagination. He becomes a passive consumer of the TV production; like drugs or alcohol, the television experience allows the participant to blot out the real world and enter into a pleasurable and passive mental state. Like an addict, he puts off other activities to spend hour after hour watching TV and finds television almost irresistible.

The influence of television on a child's consciousness is consciousness is considerably greater than on an adults. Adults already have an idea of real life relationships and others, but with a child must experience to learn. "Suppose there wasn't any TV-what do you think your child would do with the time now spent watching TV?". The child would be playing in some form. Playing is one of the most important activities to develop a child's abilities. This horrible time-eater, the television set, has robbed the child of his normal opportunities
