A detailed Summary of Attendance Policies


Students who attend colleges and universities, such as The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, are sometimes faced with classes that enforce strict attendance policies. Students enrolled in these courses may have up to a maximum number of absences before points are deducted from his or her grade. Although most classes at UNCC do not have these policies, the ones that do have caused different people related to this issue to have contrasting opinions.

Attendance policies that use point deductions as a result of absences can cause a student?s grade to suffer severely. Many of the policies only allow one to three days missed before penalty. This makes it difficult for students to take off days of school for vacation or illness. Some teachers count attendance as part of a daily grade, although some subtract points off of final averages. Even if a student is able to miss numerous days and still maintain an ?A? average for the class, his or her grade will still drop because of the attendance policy. In most situations, parents urge their children to attend college. Not many students, especially students right out of high school, could afford to pay their own way through college.
