Adam and Eve
Many people have had the dream; the one where they leave for work, school, or any other public place, only to realize that they forgot to put on some clothing. They then run, in shame and embarrassment, to the nearest hiding place. People seem to have an innate fear of being naked, and so they cover their bodies, some more so than others, so that no one can see what lies beneath. Adam and Eve were the first to experience this self consciousness. They had lived in the Garden of Eden for some time in a state of ignorant bliss, until they ate of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. In convincing Eve that she could eat the fruit, the serpent said "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil" (Genesis 3:5). Eve wanted to know this Godly wisdom. In an attempt to become more like God, Adam and Eve ate of the Tree of Knowledge. In doing so, however, they came to see how far they actually were from being gods, and ran to hide the things which linked them the most to the earthly world; their bodies. When God created Eve in Genesis 2, she and Adam had no shame with respect to their nakedness. "And the man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed" (Genesis 2:25).
She and Adam ate of the tree, and "the eyes of both were opened..." (Genesis 3:7). This does not mean that they literally "opened their eyes," but that they could see the world more clearly. They did not die, and so they realized that they possessed free will. They could direct their own lives, rather than following every direction that God gave to them. In this way, they indeed became more like God. They could create, as He created. They could rule themselves, as he ruled the world. God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. Otherwise, they could have eaten of the Tree of Life, and would have become immortal. Although this would have brought them one step closer to being divine, they never would have achieved the status of God. This fact brought disgrace to Adam and Eve. Their humanity prevented them from attaining Godliness, and so they hid that which made them human. They forgot one thing, however- they could not hide their human minds. God was, and is, considered to be infallible, and to sin against God makes a person less like Him. In biting that fruit, Adam and Eve not only realized and tried to hide their humanity, but they made it more evident. As much as we would like to think we are, humans are not perfect. Adam and Eve displayed this imperfection by disobeying God. To this day, humans cloth themsel
