Why did it take so long for Hamlet to kill Claudius?

The Theatrical play Hamlet by William Shakespeare is quite possibly one of the best play's ever created. Hamlet, a struggling prince, is a very influential. Many arguments are formed around one of his many problems and successes. One of those arguments is: Why does it take so long for Hamlet to kill King Claudius? The answer to this is Hamlet didn't kill Claudius so swiftly because of his little respect for Claudius, his forced honour towards Claudius, and his feeling of being absolutely sure of himself.

In Shakespearean times, respect is strictly enforced, and used towards the elderly, and Kings. One example of this is how Ophelia obeys her father's command to end her relationship with Hamlet (I, iii, 135). Unlike Ophelia, Hamlet has little respect or possibly none for Claudius. Claudius isn't Hamlet's father. If Hamlet was to show respect towards Claudius it would be like surrendering himself to him. Hamlet would never complete his goal given to him from his dead father. Hamlet kills Polonius behind the curtain in his mother's closet and says, "Nay I know not, is it the king?"


Hamlet is not known to be a risk taker. His good education and well reasoning is a leading cause behind of that. Hamlet doesn't kill Claudius in swift pace because of his need to be absolutely sure of himself. The play that Hamlet creates is one incidence where he tests the Ghost, and Claudius. Hamlet says (II, ii, 599-603) "And he is very potent with such spirits, abuses me to damn me. I'll have grounds more relative to this, the plays the thing wherein I'll capture the conscience of the king." In that quote Hamlet directly says he is unsure of what the ghost told him is true. He performs the play to prove himself that Claudius actually did murder King Hamlet. When Claudius is praying to forgive his sins Hamlet comes in and has a perfect opportunity to revenge his father's death. Inside himself there is a struggle weather or not to kill Claudius. Hamlet realizes that if he kills Claudius now, he'll go to heaven (III, iii, 74-80) "Now might I do it pat no when is praying; and now I'll do't: and so he goes to heaven: and so I am revenged.
