The Internet

The internet has forever changed the way we get our information. Though the technology has been around for about 40 years it was not perfected until the early to mid 1990's. With the introduction of ISP's such as America Online, Compuserve, general usage of the internet skyrocketed. These companies made it easy to search the web, chat, and use e-mail.

The internet was not always as easy as technology has made it today. Back in the 1960's the U.S. Department of Defense assigned the ARPA to experiment with linking DOD and military research contractors. ARPAnet was successful and in 1971 sent the first e-mail message "Testing 1-2-3". This was a major breakthrough in technology and would soon change the world forever. By 1971 ARPA wo


One of the most successful internet programs became peer to peer file sharing. This craze which flourished in the late 1990's made virtually any multimedia downloadable. People were able to "bootleg" music and movies on their own by way of internet. Napster was the first of these successful websites. The music industry sued the company for "copyright infringement". The industry claimed that Napster promoted the burning of songs without having to pay. The Music industry was loosing millions due to illegal file sharing on programs such as Napster. Although Napster has been shut down there have been many copycat alternative programs available.
