Joy Luck Club
American Circumstances and Chinese characters The Joy Luck Club is a book by Amy Tan containing vignettes of four Chinese mothers and their four American-born daughters. The four mothers are Suyuan Woo, An-mei Hsu, Lindo Jong, and Ying-ying St. Clair. Their daughters are June Woo, Rose Hsu, Waverly Jong and Lena St. Clair. The daughters are Americanized and they do not recognize their Chinese heritage. However, as time goes by, they revert back to their culture when they face problems in life, such as Waverly Jong in Rules of the Game, Lena St. Clair in Rice Husband, Rose Hsu in Without Wood, and June Woo in A Pair of Tickets. Amy Tan's purpose in conveying this point is to show that the strengths and advantages of these Chinese-American characters lies within their Chinese culture, for it is their origin, in their blood, their heritage, and who they truly are. When she is young, Waverly is a naturally talented chess champion. She starts playing chess with her brothers and an old man in her neighborhood named Lau Po. Eventually, she wins every game and becomes a National Chess Champion. But then, Waverly stops playing chess after she has a fight with her mom when she is annoyed that her mom takes her around and introdu
Lena is married to Harold and they divide all the expenses and each person keeps a separate account. In this marriage, Harold is taking control with his trying to be equal. For example, the ideas for their firm is Lena's and yet she is only an associate that is paid less than he, for the reason that it does not look fair to others if he promotes her just because they are married. Ying-ying once mentions of "thing not being balanced" and it is considered "Chinese nonsense" to Lena. Ironically, it now applies to Lena's marriage under the symbol of the wobbling table in her house. The table itself is not balanced because its legs, represent Lena and Harold, are uneven. Thus, when the vase, represents their marriage, is put on top, it would eventually falls and breaks in half. Regarding the collapse of the vase that Lena says she knows it would happen, Ying-ying asks her, "Then why you don't stop it?" (Pg. 181) This "simple question" to Lena finally helps her realize that she has an opportunity to save her marriage. She can do it but she does not try and is about to let it go. The use of Chinese belief by her mom guides Lena to prevent the collapse of her marriage before it is too late. June's mom, Suyuan, passes away with unfinished business. Suyuan has two twin daughters from her first marriage that she leaves behind in Kweilin. She is looking for them and she dies before she can see them. So, June has to go to China to see her half-sisters instead. Seeing her sisters, June notices no trace of her mother in them. Yet, they still look familiar. It is beca
