In the late 1800's Butte was a huge mining town. The discovery that the town was laying on one of the best copper veins in the west had a lot to do with it. The demands of copper in the common household sent Buttes industry of fate skyrocketing. Butte Hill, as the locals called it, was covered with smoke stacks and headframes. With all of this in mind the economic vision for postindustrial Butte is optimistic for some. Still other have serious doubts about the future economy of the city. Even so, Butte is putting up a good fight in this race and that says a lot about its character.

With all of the symbols, one stands above the rest: Our Lady of the Rockies statue that towers above the pit and the entire Butte hill. This statue was put up in the mid 1980's after the worst mine related layoffs. The statue is 90 feet tall and weighs 50 tons. The statue stood for a new hope to survive no matter what.
