I believe that the statements and actions of Robespierre are a departure from the ideas of the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment. In my opinion the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment were a time where science and curiosity flourished. The Scientific Revolution drastically changed humanity's course. The Enlightenment weakened its hold of superstition on people and encouraged them to think of new ways to do things. Robespierre is an opposite of this view point considering during the Reign of Terror curiosity ultimately killed the cat.

"All that is required for this enlightenment is freedom; and particularly the least harmful of all that may be called freedom, namely, the freedom for man to make public use of his reason in all matters. {3, Kant, 55} Enlightenment thinkers had many ideas that included encouragement of the spread of reason, and human rights such as freedom of the press. Where else would one who did not support the government be killed through torture of the Reign of Terror? Despite his ideas I believe that Robespierre had more than just a democratic country in mind when he wrote The Republic of Virtue. Although he added many democratic steps to ensure his own republic, his basic ambitions and goals were to create a revolution of control by himself.
